IKO Shingle Repair: The San Francisco Owner’s Guide
IKO shingle repair in San Francisco typically runs $425 – $875 installed for a standard repair of 10 – 20 shingles, including matching the existing shingle profile, replacing any damaged underlayment beneath, and a written price before we start. We stock IKO Cambridge, Dynasty, and Marathon shingle profiles on our trucks, so most repairs in San Francisco are done the day we arrive. Most owners discover the problem after a winter storm blows through the Sunset or Richmond: they spot a shingle in the flower bed, notice grit collecting in the downspout, or see a water stain spreading across the ceiling of a top-floor bedroom.
Which IKO Models This Applies To
We repair IKO Cambridge, Cambridge Cool Colors, Dynasty, Marathon, and Royal Estate shingle lines. The practical difference between these matters because IKO shingles are not interchangeable across series, even when the color looks close from the ground. Cambridge uses IKO’s standard 5 5/8-inch exposure; Dynasty uses a slightly different notch pattern and a stronger sealant strip; Marathon is a heavier architectural shingle with a wider shadow line. If you have a leftover bundle in the garage, read the wrapper: the series name and color code (like “Harvard Slate” or “Dual Black”) are printed on the side. If you don’t have a bundle, we match by taking a small sample from an inconspicuous area, usually behind a plumbing vent or along a lower eave, not by guessing from roof level.
OEM IKO shingles are what we install in almost every case. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but IKO’s color lots and granule blends are specific enough that a close-enough match reads as a patch job from the street. For discontinued IKO colors, which we do see on older San Francisco roofs, we source from regional suppliers who keep new-old stock, and we’ll tell you honestly if a perfect match isn’t possible before any work begins.

Signs Your IKO Shingle Repair Is Failing
- Curling or lifting corners near the roof edge. San Francisco’s wind off the ocean works at the sealant strip over time, especially on west-facing slopes in the Outer Sunset. Once a corner lifts, wind gets under it and peels the shingle back like a page.
- Granule loss showing in downspouts or gutters. A little granule shed is normal for the first year. Heavy accumulation after year five means the asphalt core is breaking down, and that usually starts on south-facing slopes that get the most sun exposure.
- Water stains on ceilings below the roof line. Stains don’t always mean the shingle above the stain is the problem. Water travels along the sheathing, so the actual breach might be six feet uphill, near a pipe boot or a valley. That’s why we trace, not patch.
- Cracked shingles after a storm. IKO’s fiberglass mat is durable but brittle in cold weather. A crack that runs across the shingle face lets water sit against the mat, and San Francisco’s fog keeps it damp long after the rain stops, so small cracks don’t stay small.
- Blisters on the shingle surface. Trapped moisture below the shingle expands when the sun hits it, creating raised bubbles that eventually pop and expose the mat. We see this on older San Francisco roofs where ventilation was never upgraded to current code.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we quote for IKO shingle repair in San Francisco, and what’s in the number:
| Scope | Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Single shingle replacement, no structural repair | $425 – $550 |
| 10 – 15 shingles, standard match (Cambridge/Dynasty) | $550 – $700 |
| Repair including underlayment replacement or flashing work | $650 – $875 |
The price you see is the price you pay, in writing, before work starts. That covers the shingles, matching color, any fasteners, sealer, haul-away of old material, and cleanup. What moves the number: roof pitch (steep San Francisco Victorians take longer and cost more per shingle), whether we’re on the second or third story, and whether the sheathing underneath is still solid. If we open the section and find rotted sheathing, we stop, show you a photo, and give you a new written price for the added scope. No surprise invoices.
Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s stamped on the written estimate.
DIY or Call Us?
Walking the roof to identify a missing shingle is something a homeowner can safely do from the ground with binoculars, and checking gutters for granules requires nothing more than a ladder and a steady hand. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto a San Francisco roof to replace shingles yourself. Roofs here are often steeper than they look from the street, especially on older Edwardian builds, and working with sealant and fasteners at height is exactly where a small repair turns into a fall. Beyond the safety concern, there’s the matching problem: installing a shingle that doesn’t match the IKO series or color lot leaves you with a patch that looks worse than the original damage, and it won’t seal properly against the surrounding shingles.
If you see shingle damage, call us at (831) 228-3330. Erik Lindgren will walk the roof, check the flashing and underlayment, and give you a written price for the repair before anything moves.
FAQs
A properly installed IKO shingle repair should last the remaining life of the surrounding roof, which in San Francisco’s coastal climate is typically 20 – 25 years for architectural shingles. The repair’s lifespan depends most on whether the underlayment was dry when we installed it and whether the sealant strip had time to bond. Call (831) 228-3330 for an exact assessment of your roof’s condition.
In most cases, we can repair just the damaged section if the rest of the roof is intact and the IKO shingles have life left in them. The exceptions are when the underlying sheathing has rotted through or the shingles around the damage have already lost their seal and lift in a gust. We’ll tell you which situation you have after we inspect it, and you’ll see the repair price before we touch the roof.
Most single-section repairs are done in one visit, usually two to three hours on site. That includes matching the shingle color, replacing the damaged section, sealing the edges, and cleaning up the area with a photo of the finished clean-up before we leave. Larger repairs with flashing work may take a half day.
We stock IKO Cambridge, Dynasty, and Marathon shingles in common San Francisco colors on our trucks. For less common colors or discontinued IKO lines, we source from local Bay Area suppliers and can typically get the right match within a few days. We’ll confirm the match before any payment is made and show you the bundle label so you know exactly what’s going on your roof.
